Taking A Little Bit Of Hilton Head Home
What souvenirs do you like to take home from a Hilton Head Island vacation? My family never failed to bring home vacation t-shirts for souvenirs. What souvenir did we give friends and family who came to visit? You guessed it, t-shirts!
We are all more distinct with our tastes though, aren’t we? Yes, there are t-shirts in all sizes, colors and fonts to choose from. Where are the souvenirs not readily snatched up for cheap at a truck stop on your way to Hilton Head? I thought you’d never ask! And just in case, I’ve included a few genuine Hilton Head t-shirt vendors for the weekend attire lovers.
There are so many vendors that you may need a reminder when you’re on vacation here on the island. Restaurants–they’re everywhere here! It’s fun to remember the local Lowcountry cuisine isn’t it? Some of the island’s tastiest restaurants have t-shirts and other souvenirs – Boathouse Grill, One Hot Mama’s, Crazy Crab, Marley’s, Captain Woody’s and Hudson’s are some good examples. Hudson’s has the others beat with a boat shaped gift shop less than ten yards away from the restaurant! You can also find Lowcountry cookbooks at various locations in Harbour Town and around town. Pick one up for your own kitchen. Maybe you’ll be inspired to make some Lowcountry dishes when you return home.
We’ll continue on with the food theme. Do you have a sweet tooth like me? Lovers of chocolate go to The Chocolate Canopy! How can you go wrong with chocolate made daily by hand? It’s not just any chocolate either. The Chocolate Canopy has chocolate alligators, golf balls, loggerhead turtles, sea shells and other island icons. This is a do-not-miss stop for edible treasures. Word of caution: these gifts are so yummy they may not make it to the intended recipient.
While on the subject of golf balls… my son has taken absolute delight in a discovery at Pirates Island miniature golf. Not only is Pirate’s Island a lot of fun for the whole family, but it also has a stash of pirate gear and novelty golf balls. My son is a Bengals fan so he was quick to pick out a striped ball in Bengal orange and black. The Top of the Light Shop located in the Harbour Town Lighthouse also has some splendid novelty golf balls adorned with the lighthouse.
Another location that seems obvious for golf balls is…? You guessed it! Golf pro shops. There are plenty of golf pro shops on Hilton Head Island that have first-rate golf apparel with Hilton Head insignia to head home in sporty style. Collecting golf balls from every island course might be a fun idea!
If you are a traditionalist of the t-shirt variety, I’ve lined up a few selections. The three t-shirt vendors that lead the pack are seasoned veterans to the “HHI” scene. You’ve likely heard of Salty Dog T-Shirt Factory and have seen Jake, the Salty Dog mascot who adorns all t-shirts from the Salty Dog T-Shirt Factory. These shirts are a Hilton Head classic for residents and island visitors alike.
Two other Hilton Head Island t-shirt vendors are Camp Hilton Head and Hilton Head Shirt Company. Both are easy to find and have been part of the Hilton Head landscape for many years.
Hilton Head Island has twelve miles of ocean that we’re sure you spend time enjoying. While you’re strolling its shores, remember there is an endless supply of free souvenirs scattered at your feet. Sea shells are nature’s gift to you! There are so many and they vary in type, size and color. Shark teeth are also washed up on the beach for your taking. Instead of spending money at a store to buy shark teeth necklaces, how much more awesome (and thoughtful) would it be to make your own? If you haven’t read my blog entitled “Buried Treasures” take a moment and read it. It provides some insider insight as to where to discover some amazing no-cost treasures! Do take heed of local beach prohibitions–removal of sand dollars and starfish is not allowed. These are local habitants, part of our sea life, and are protected as such.
If you come laden with well-padded wallets – wait, where are you now? Let me meet up with you! Joking aside, there are two terrific custom jewelry shops on Hilton Head that I’d recommend for high-end souvenirs. These provide one-of-a-kind HHI pendants, necklaces, earrings and more that will be cherished for a long time to come. These gifts are not just for vacationers, locals enjoy wearing island-influenced pieces as well. Heritage Jewelers is very accessible at the North End of the island and Forsythe Jewelers is inside Sea Pines Plantation. You will be amazed at their stunning jewelry!
What’s important is that you go home with what is just right for you, your family and friends. I may have provided you some guidance through my native island expertise, but you are in the driver’s seat now! Go out there and shop! Have fun finding great vacation mementos to remind you of your Hilton Head days. Come back and see us again soon, y’all hear?
