Fourth of July Celebration Island Style
It’s true, we’re spoiled. Other island residents like me know how incredible waterside fireworks are and there is no shortage of options here.
Not only do you get unobstructed views from the water, but there is something magical about the bursts of electric colors reflecting off the water all while the island breezes pirouette around you. Many of us locals like to view the fireworks by boat; after all, it’s the best view! The next best viewing is close to water – either at a marina or a waterfront property. There are three spots on Hilton Head where you’ll have an equally wonderful experience – ooohs and ahhhs guaranteed.
Shelter Cove Marina is a popular, family-friendly spot for Fourth of July festivities and fireworks on Hilton Head. They always do an excellent job of running fun family daylight activities which lead up to a fantastic firework finale. As a child, I spent many a July 4th enjoying the live music of Shannon Tanner, savoring an ice cream cone rapidly thanks to the summer heat, and strolling the marina prior to dusk falling. This is a tradition I enjoy now with my own child.
Sea Pines Resort has fireworks over Harbour Town with the lighthouse providing a grand backdrop. Greg Russell, a Hilton Head music fixture, will be performing under the Liberty Oak at the yacht basin as the sun sets. Greg has been performing under the Liberty Tree in Harbour Town for over 30 seasons. As a little girl, I took the stage (as have children for many years) to sing-a-long with him. Shuttles are available and will most likely be the only transportation allowed to and from Harbour Town to transport attendees once inside the gates of Sea Pines. Visitors to Sea Pines have to pay the gate fee to attend. Both Shelter Cove and Harbour Town tend to be crowded so it may take a little more time to exit the grounds after the celebrations.
Skull Creek Marina is on the Intracoastal Waterway at the north end of the island. Fireworks start later at this spot and are accompanied by live music from close by waterfront restaurants. Also, Bluewater Resort & Marina overlooks Skull Creek and the Intracoastal Waterway giving a perfect vantage point for the array of colors popping overhead.
I have attended Fourth of July fireworks at all three locations, and can say with all certainty that I have enjoyed all three.
The island active types also celebrate. “The 29th Annual Firecracker 5000 Road Race and Fun Walk” will be held on Monday, July 4 at Jarvis Creek Park. This race is not only a very social and healthy event, but it is the largest, oldest road race in our county and one of the top ten races in South Carolina. We expect over 1600 runners and walkers of all ages to participate. Every child receives a prize just for participating! Now, don’t jump ahead of me, adults! The same doesn’t apply to you, I’m sorry. But come out and enjoy some fit fun!
The Spinnaker Resorts Recreation crew is hosting the 5th annual Fourth of July Celebration at Bluewater Resort & Marina. Remember I mentioned that Bluewater Resort sits on the Intracoastal Waterway near Skull Creek? Owners and Spinnaker guests on Hilton Head will have a premier view of the Skull Creek fireworks and celebrate prior to the fireworks. From 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. there will be a catered BBQ dinner, beer and wine cash bar, children’s games, and live music by the Chilly Willy Band will start at 7:00 p.m. Come in your red, white and blue for a fantastic Independence Day celebration with Spinnaker Resorts flair.
