Kayak with Bottlenose Dolphins on Hilton Head
Hilton Head’s master plan of the 1950’s was created to preserve its lush tropical environment so that natural habitat and wildlife would continue to flourish.
The preserved Lowcountry is dotted with beautiful azaleas, magnolias, live oaks and palm trees while inland lagoons have abundant fish life that keep the alligators and birds satisfied. Over 350 species of birds have been spotted, while the island remains a nesting spot for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle.
Bottlenose dolphins are readily spotted off the beaches during summer and pods can be seen in the winter off Dolphin Head—one of their favorite spots along the east coast during the winter. Wildlife can be viewed on foot, horseback, kayak or by boat. It’s hard to miss, and can also be seen undisturbed at the Audubon Newhall Reserve and the Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge.
